How your body becomes more Acidic or Alkaline…

There are two main factors that contribute to making the body too acidic

  1. The foods we eat (soda, meats, coffee, chocolate, flour and sugar)
  2. The amount of stress in our bodies

Understanding the PH levels in the body

Most people don’t realize how important optimal pH is to one’s health. Having a balanced PH protects our bodies from the inside out.
An imbalanced pH allows unhealthy organisms to grow, damages tissues and organs and hurts the immune system. The optimal pH is 7.36 which is just alkaline.

An acidic environment in one’s body will decrease its ability to repair damaged cells and detoxify heavy metals. It also creates an environment for tumour cells to flourish, making the body more susceptible to fatigue and illness.

How to improve your acidity levels

Start your day off with a tall glass of water with a hint of lemon. Water with lemon gives the body clean energy. Lemons are not too acidic, they actually help reverse acidity and boosts your metabolism.

Eat more dark and green vegetables. Green is a colour that is associated with all the good aspects of life. Try green superfood powders or green juices for that boost.

Get more exercise. Doing aerobic exercise is the best way to maintain the acid-alkaline levels in your body, as it helps the muscles to reduce the accumulation of acid in your system.

Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol changes your Ph by altering your kidneys’ ability to maintain substances such as phosphate in your blood. Too many fluids can overload and change phosphate levels that then decrease the acidity of your blood, making your pH levels rise.

Eat, raw unsalted almonds. It helps to combat acidity in the body.
Consume a multivitamin. Many of the vitamins in a good multivitamin will help you alkalize your body.

Reduce the amount of stress in your life.

Strategies for dealing with stress:
 Drink tea- chamomile tea – it helps to calm and relax the nerves
 Go for a walk or get some exercise – pumps your brain’s ‘feel good’ receptors

 Reduce/eliminate coffee and or caffeine – It elevates blood pressure and stress hormones but also magnifies a person’s perception of stress

 Get a good night’s sleep – Try to sleep at least 7 – 8 hours every night
 Avoid processed foods- These foods will have an influence on your insulin levels and release the stress hormone.

 Flaxseeds- Helps to reduce blood pressure, constipation, high in omega 3s that helps to lower inflammation levels as well as lowering cholesterol levels

 Breathing techniques- Getting larger than the normal value of air into the lungs and holding it there for a short time. Take 5 seconds to slowly inhale a larger than normal volume of air.

Hold it in your lungs for at least 5 seconds. Take 5 seconds to slowly exhale the air. Do this for at least 10 times.

 Listen to soothing music- Music can calm you down and make you think more clearly.

 Take a break to do something you enjoy- We all need a break every now and then.

 Get out of the house, meet with a friend- A little relaxation, laughter and fun can do wonders to relieve your tension and stress

 Write it down- Journaling can be an effective stress management technique to many. Write down your thoughts on daily everyday life. It can help you to process emotions and can have a calming effect.

 Try mindful meditation
 Ignite your senses of smell by burning a scented candle or incorporating a few essential oils.

Alkaline producing foods

Sweet potatoes

Acid producing processed food and drinks:

White flour
Soft drinks
Fruit juices

Neutral foods

Organic soy

Symptoms of being too acidic

If your body is too acidic, you might experience a lot of fatigue, even if you feel as if you are getting enough sleep at night. You may also suffer from joint pain, headaches, chronic pain and or stiff muscles.
In some cases, people who are too acidic may suffer from depression, irritability and brain fog.

Symptoms of being to alkaline

This is much less common than being too acidic. People who are too alkaline may suffer from nausea, vomiting, confusion, light-headedness and muscle twitching.

Side note

Calcium-rich dairy foods can aggravate osteoporosis because they create acidity in the body. When your blood contains too much acid, it will take calcium out of the bones because calcium is an alkaline substance.
This will then help the body balance the pH level. So while many people think that eating calcium is the key to strong bones, the best way to prevent osteoporosis is actually to balance your acidity by
eating more alkaline green leafy vegetables.
